How's this for showing you're serious about your product? Apparently Chanel just finished up shooting a men's fragrance ad directed by none other than MARTIN SCORSESE. I have to admit I laughed a little when I read this, but it's actually not unprecedented; Chanel has had other big names direct their ads (Baz Luhrmann, for one). It's just a little funny. I'm trying to picture what a Scorsese-directed Chanel fragrance ad would look and sound like. (Interestingly, in that picture Coco herself doesn't look TOO far removed from the impeccably dressed crime-boss wives of Martin movies.) The man has a knack-like-whoa for pairing song with scene (I'd say he's only matched by Wes Anderson and Cameron Crowe in that area). So I'm picturing this ad having, like, greasy-haired but well-dressed gangster types walking around, smoking, with big-haired Italian women, all set to "Gimme Shelter" or something more ironic...like "Then He Kissed Me" by The Crystals. Oh wait, that's totally Goodfellas:



I went through a phase circa junior year of HS where I was obsessed with mafia movies. Just couldn't get enough of those loyal Sicilians. Practically every movie I watched/rented involved the mob somehow. I'm pretty sure that at that point in my life my mother thought I was A.) Morally bankrupt B.) Actually a boy or C.) Both. Not true though. It was just that I'd recently discovered The Godfather in all its greatness and then moved on to Martin Scorsese movies. So even though my obsession with organized crime and mafiosos has fizzled, I still have Mad Love for Many Marty Movies. SOOO I feel the need to pay tribute AND celebrate the creation of this recent commercial.

Nothing's really been confirmed about the ad yet, not even the name of the fragrance itself. All I can say for sure is that it stars French actor Gaspard Ulliel (um, qui?) Hate to be a stickler for tradition here, but all I'm saying is it would've been kinda cool for MS to use Leo DiCaprio, Harvey Keitel, or Robert de Niro himself in the ad. Wouldn't that make Collaboration Eighty Bajillion if Marty and Bob had worked together again? They've had quite a Dream Team thing going since, what, 1970? I'm not sure exactly when Mean Streets came out (their first collaboration) and I don't feel like googling it and pretending I'm hip enough to know the exact date offhand, but I just want to say that any commercial starring Robert de Niro would have been BEYOND COOL. I mean, cigs have grossed me out since I first started breathing, but no one can make smoking look cooler than Robert de Niro as Jimmy in Goodfellas. Don't believe me? Please just watch this scene. Have you ever seen acting this good without any dialogue??? Seriously. And yes, "Sunshine of Your Love" thumping in [not really] the background also has a lot to do with it, but still. COOL:



They could just use that shot of RDN standing at the bar for the Chanel commercial. I guarantee that scent would be flying off the shelves. Maybe at the end they could show Robert de Niro spraying the fragrance in Morrie's eyes instead of killing him like he does in the movie? Awesome.

Some highlights/heck-no's from the 67th Annual Golden Globes:

THE MARTIN SCORSESE MONTAGE!!!! Beyond amazing, along with his follow-up speech. I. love. that. man. and. his. films. The intro by "Leo and Bob," as "Marty" affectionately called them, was also fantastic in itself. Can't top an icon.

Third time's the charm. Wait, no...every time's the charm. Mad Men won for best TV drama. Yet again. I've been curious about this show for a while but never tuned in or had a DVD marathon. It's probably time for me to step outside my Gossip Girl box and...become addicted to an additional show? Could that really be the answer? for now, I just really appreciate January Jones's proclamation of Jersey Shore's amazingness. Some style favorites:
*Drew Barrymore. Apparently she's making lots of Worst-Dressed lists, but IMO, gorgeous!! Not sure if it was the dress itself or just the fact that she was giving off the most ridiculously angelic glow tonight. I'm talking like EBCC's (new acronym for Ethereal Beaming Cherub Cheeks). So pretty!! And the shade of her dress was a surprising complement to that gloooow.
*I loved Kate Hudson's dress, but I'm iffy about the shoes. Just saying.
*Julia Roberts. Ok, so maybe few people had actually heard of, much less seen Duplicity before tonight, but I'm glad she was there to present best drama to Avatar, and she sure had quite the polished-free-spirit look going on. Rock that tousled hair and short dress, you Pretty Woman you!!
*And I'm just going to go ahead and say Nicole Kidman. I barely remember what she was wearing, but this woman is a near-goddess and looked the part tonight. Why not list her? She also encouraged the audience to contribute to relief in Haiti before launching into anything GG-related, which is more than we can say for Ricky Gervais.

No-no's: I didn't watch any pre-shows, so my picks were limited to those ladies that graced the stage, and only one particular dress left me confused (well, other than Cher's getup, but that's a given.) Julianna Margulies's neckline couldn't make up its mind. It reminded me of that maroon-ish Herve Leger number Serena wore in an early season 3 GG episode. Can't remember the episode title, but it was the one with all the weird Scott/Rufus sketchiness and the big auction at Sotheby's. Anyway, the dress wasn't heinous, but Serena's chest was divided into...thirds? Fifths? Hard to tell. Julianna Margulies's neckline seemed similarly confused. Sorry, not a fan.

Meryl Streep is just a phenomenally classy woman. Let me ignore her obvious amazing-ness as an actress for a moment (is that possible?) and just gush about her acceptance speech for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical (Julie and Julia). Meryl gave 2 (3?) shoutouts to Partners in Health, a Boston-based organization that prioritizes adequate health care for people living in poverty. Haiti has been one of their biggest undertakings since before the earthquake. All entering freshmen at my fiiiine school are required to read a book about the man behind it, and I know a lot of people who know a lot of PIH people, and so on and so forth, and it's just an amazing organization doing amazing things and I could really sense Lady Streep's sincerity. ^Click the link or the orange banner on the side of this page> and DONATE!! So excited (though not surprised) to see a very deserving Sandra Bullock nab the best actress award for The Blind Side. Love, love, love this movie, the setting :) and her performance and the amazing story behind it. Quoting Michael Oher when accepting her award, defining family as those who "have your back," the nod to her husband, thanking the Tuohy family for being so inspirational...not gonna lie, I teared up. Also notable: How she publicly acknowledged that she's been making smarter role choices lately. How sweet was it when she told her husband "It's no surprise my work improved when I met you, because I never knew what it was like to have someone have my back." Tears!!!

Little things:
*Fun: Recurring Alec Baldwin jokes! All in good fun. Hilarious.
*Sexier with Age: George Clooney. Talk about aging gracefully. Always. And the extra facial hair is really, really working for me.
*Bridging Generation Gaps: Sir Paul McCartney referring to himself as "that guy from Rock Band." Perfection.
*Low Blows: Host Ricky Gervais's direct poke at Paul's divorce. Really Ricky? That would have been pretty low in any case, but might I remind you that PAUL'S A BEATLE AND JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE BRITISH DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN BE MEAN TO THE BEATLES? Disregarding Paul's Beatlehood and legendary status, it was just tasteless anyway. Also pretty classless: mentioning Mel Gibson's drinking problems. Funny? Necessary? No and no.
*Gervais in General: Even aside from those remarks, did anyone else find him really surprisingly annoying tonight? Was it just me?
*Supersweet: Mo'Nique's acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress set the bar pretty high. Jeff Bridges's (still "The Dude" in my eyes) shoutout to his wife of 30 years was adorable.



I was disappointed that I didn't get to see the love of my life, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, make an acceptance speech for best musical or comedy actor. JGL's smile and voice make me feel, to steal one of his lines from (500) Days of Summer, "like anything is possible, like life is worth it...?" Sadly, no exaggeration there. I actually squealed when his face graced the screen; cameras caught him mid-laugh/grin every time. siiiiiigh. (Robert Downey Jr. won for his work in Sherlock Holmes...come on, I love RDJ, but eh, this was kinda hard to get excited about. His acceptance speech, however, was funny, and let's face it, he...wasn't looking UNFINE.)

Given my obsession with (500) Days of Summer and JGL, I'd have loved to see it take home best picture (musical or comedy), but I wasn't really expecting it to. I had my $$ on Julie and Julia. So one of my big surprises of the night was...The Hangover? Loved the movie, loved that it was smartly smutty, and esp. loved Ed Helms as Stu, but didn't expect it to win. HOWEVER, the fact that Mike Tyson came on stage to both present the movie and accept the award was a pretty hilarious fish-out-of-water image.

Biggest surprise of the night, IMO: That Jane Lynch (Glee) lost to Chloe Sevigny (Big Love) for supporting actress in a series/miniseries/TV movie. Definitely thought J-Lyn had it in the bag. Hello, let me also use this as an opportunity to plug her not-recently-relevant but ENDLESSLY hysterical performances in the Christopher Guest mockumentaries (if you haven't seen A Mighty Wind or Best in Show, well, SEE THEM.) Oh, and Chloe's dress: were the ruffles excessive? I can't really decide, but apparently it ripped as she was accepting her award because she literally screamed and then in the middle of thanking everyone burst out with "I can't believe he ripped my dress!" and moved right along thanking everyone. It felt like a Tourettes moment. My advice: go for less dress next time. X-Treme Ruffling=Not conducive to dress durability. (Reese Witherspoon kept it simple and looked stunning in that blue number). Yes, I love Chloe's fashion risks, but if you're gonna get stepped on or have your wings ripped off, it might not be worth it.

O for Obvious: Christoph Waltz being named best supporting actor for his turn in Inglorious Basterds. Don't get me wrong, much like my take on JGL, I'd have loved to see a beamy Matt Damon give a great speech and a dashing smile (the Good Will Hunting Oscar "speech" is still awesomely adorable years later), but everyone knew Christoph would own this one. Even Christoph himself knew (no way he concocted that Hallmarky comment about how the people of his world make his "globe" golden right there on the spot.) Hey, Waltzy can be Schmaltzy!!
